Defense Ministry official: Afghanistan interested in expanding Azerbaijani mission

Afghanistan expects that Azerbaijan will expand the mission on security in this country, Deputy Defence Minister of Afghanistan, General Zahir Azimi said. Afghanistan wants to increase economic aid from official Baku and expand relations between the Defence Ministries of two countries, especially in the field of military equipment, he said.

Military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Afghanistan will be discussed during the governmental officials' visit to Kabul May 20, the Ministry of Defence said. About 90 peacekeepers of Azerbaijani Armed Forces serve as a part of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

The detachment was created in 1997. Then a battalion of peacekeepers as a part of Azerbaijani National Army was created. Azerbaijani peacekeepers served as a part of the multinational forces in Iraq and Kosovo.

General Azimi expressed satisfaction with the service of Azerbaijani soldiers in Afghanistan. He believes that Afghani people have a positive attitude to soldiers from Muslim countries. It is a very important factor in ensuring the security of the country.
