Azerbaijani students to stage protest outside Euronews headquarters

07 December 2009 [09:35] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani students studying in France and other European countries plan to gather outside Euronews television news channel’s headquarters in Lyon to protest against its anti-Azerbaijani propaganda.

The protest is also supported by IRELI Public Association.

Jeyhun Osmanli, Chairman of IRELI, said Azerbaijani students studying in Europe, as well as Azerbaijanis living in France will protest against Euronews’ biased position against Azerbaijan next week.

Azerbaijan was angered by Euronews recent report which showed Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territory of Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state, and the head of that separatist regime as "President".

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed protest and condemned the news channel’s misleading stance on the long-drawn-out conflict.

Azerbaijan National Television and Radio Council (NTRC) said it would bring up the issue of suspending Euronews in local cable networks in accordance with existing legislation if it continues anti-Azerbaijani propaganda in a continuing manner.

Euronews assured it will prepare a programme in favour of Azerbaijan to maintain the balance, said Nushiravan Maharramli, Chairman of the NTRC.

"If they do not maintain the balance, there will be problems concerning the transmission of this channel via cable networks in Azerbaijan. We will take adequate measures. Euronews is currently available via almost all cable networks in Azerbaijan,” he added.
