Azerbaijani MP: We will witness progress in resolving Nagorno-Karabakh conflict soon

05 December 2009 [12:16] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with member of Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (parliament) Zahid Oruj.
What is your assessment of the outcome of the Munich meeting between Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict?

Probably, the presidents have reached  some consensus at the meeting in Germany. The only question is whether this consensus is apoint of contact, which the sides reached before this meeting which Armenia has already manages to reduce to zero. I think the negotiations that are likely to have been constructive in nature were result of statements made by Azerbaijan. I think we will witness progress in the resolving the Karabakh conflict in near future. Time will show whether this progress will be return of seven Armenia- occupied regions or any other step.

You probably remember the Armenian sniper, who killed Azerbaijani civilian on the day of the Munich negotiations. How do you comment on the incident?

Many civilians has been killed after the ceasefire agreement was reached. Nevertheless, I think this killing of innocent civilian is not accidental. This is a kind of Armenian response to Azerbaijan’s statements. I recently read a few articles in which Armenia is trying to push Azerbaijan and the OSCE Minsk Group, as if it was Azerbaijan who declared a war on Armenia. But one should not forget that Armenia has invaded Azerbaijan’s territory and Azerbaijan must mobilize all its forces against Armenia.

How would you predict further development of events in the frontline of the Azerbaijani and Armenian armies?

The situation on the frontline depends on political situation to settle the Karabakh problem. The stronger Azerbaijan’s position on the conflict settlement is, the more often Armenia will try to provoke it on the war front.
