Ashgabat has more desire than physical fitness: expert

15 September 2009 [10:21] - TODAY.AZ
“The presence of huge gas reserves in Turkmenistan is an important factor, but this time it has no decisive role,” expert at Azerbaijani Lider-TV Tofiq Abbasov said commenting on latest statement by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov claiming that the country has enough stocks of gas for Nabucco.
“It is important that countries with vast natural resources, including gas, would be prepared to provide quick delivery to the networks of supply. It is imperative that technological capacity would also be able to meet needs of one party or another,” the expert said.

“I think Turkmenistan recently intensifies its rhetoric about greater preparedness and thus positions itself as a competent player. But in fact it is not so,” the expert added.

“Turkmenistan needs huge investments to realize profitable for itself supplies. But this country does not demonstrate openness for global trade, to participate in multinational operations and in projects such as Nabucco. I believe Ashgabat has more desire than physical fitness,” Abbasov said.

“Therefore, in this case, the activity shown by the Turkmen President Berdymuhammedov aims to ensure that countries such as Russia and others would have interests in Turkmenistan. No more. Russia gives Turkmenistan great promise, but really it wants to stake out a claim for a supply of additional volumes. For Moscow, it is vital because, amid energy battle with the West, it wants to show that Ashgabat takes Russia’s side,” the political expert said.

He said with regard to the comparative data of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan is in a better investment and technological situation and readiness of Azerbaijan to the new proposals is not called into question by anyone.

"Azerbaijan has demonstrated its ability in practice, which Turkmenistan has not been able to."
