Russian General Staff: "Russian Defense Ministry does not plan to bomb the oil pipeline in Georgia"

12 August 2008 [10:04] - TODAY.AZ
"The Russian Defense Ministry has no plans to bomb the pipeline in Georgia", said deputy chief of Russian armed forces general staff Anatoli Nogovitsin at a press conference on August 11.
"Oil pipelines in Georgia are still operating like usually, said he, "We have no plans to damage them". The general assumed the possibility of ecological catastrophe, which may be caused by the failure in the oil supplies of Georgia and in this connection he voiced his deep concern.

"We are not going to attack, but we are fulfilling our peacekeeping functions", said he, noting that Russian military actions are not excessive but absolutely adequate to the situation around South Ossetia.

It should be reminded that the Georgian government stated on Saturday that "Russia air forces attacked the BTC pipeline and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzirum pipeline lying parallel to it-the two main energy projects of the country. 28 out of 30 bombs exploded with some of them in the direct proximity to the pipeline, just 5 meters away".

The statement says: "This attack goes beyond the limits of bombardment of one of the strategic objects of Georgia, as this pipeline pumps oil to Turkey, Europe and the United States, therefore, these attacks pose a threat to the strategic interests of the mentioned countries".

Independent sources did not confirm this information. Representatives of BP operator-company said they are unaware of these attacks.
