Matthew Bryza: "Meeting of Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan is possible in the near future"

18 April 2008 [14:17] - TODAY.AZ
The meeting of Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan Serzh Sarkissyan and Ilham Aliyev on the resolution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict is possible in the near future.
The due announcement was made by Matthew Bryza, US deputy Assistant Secretary of State on Europe and Eurasia and US co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group.

He did not give an exact response on requests of the law-makers to elaborate on the date of talks between Aliyev and Sarkissyan. According to Bryza the organization of such a meeting is a matter of time. The Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia, who will have to arrange talks of the leaders of the two countries "can meet within a month or so", said the US diplomat.

At the same time, Bryza noted again that the situation around Nagorno Karabakh has no military solution according to Washington. It requires "political agreements" based on compromises by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia", said Bryza.

He did not agree with proposals that the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group on Nagorno Karabakh, chaired by Russia, FRance and the United States, is not effective any more. The work of the group is "highly valuable" and "very useful", said Bryza.

He spoke at the session of a two-party commission under the US Congress on security and cooperation in Europe (Helsinki commission), devoted to the situation in Armenia. The body is chaired by member of the House of Representatives Elsi Hastings (democratic, Florida) and co-chaired by senator Benjamin Cardin (democrat, Maryland).
