Yashar Isakov: "There are no hobo Jews in Azerbaijan. But there is a Jewish editor-in-chief and deputy editor-in-chief of newspapers"

16 April 2008 [13:31] - TODAY.AZ
The current level of Azerbaijani-Israeli relations is unique, said Yashar Isakov, editor-in-chief of Birja Plus newspaper and chief of department of culture in his interview to Day.Az.
He said that the citizens of the two countries visit each other's wedding parties, birthdays, come for rest, despite of high tariffs on international phone calls and air ticket prices.

He voiced an eccentric proposal to Baku and Kiev to think over invitation of Israel to GUAM.

According to him, the Jews are well integrated with the sociopolitical processes, ongoing in Azerbaijan.

"The verb "integrated" is inadmissible regarding Azerbaijani Jews. How can a family member integrate with his parents' house?", said the editor-in-chief.

He noted that being a pure Jew, he is an editor-in-chief of the Birja Plus newspaper, while Konstantin Shapiro is deputy editor-in-chief of the Oko newspaper.

"Jewish deputy Evda Abramov is represented in the parliament of our country. National hero of Azerbaijan Albert Agarunov died during the fight for Shusha. Jews have worked and still work in almost all state institutions of the country, they are largely represented in private business.

I can state that Azerbaijan always treated Jews like other nationalities, being always tolerant to them. My being Jew did not hinder me from entering and from my activity in the interior bodies, where I was teaching in the Police Academy of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Internal Affairs from 1991 until 1997. By the way, there are no hobo Jews in the capital city. Here "the discrimination" rules!", the editor-in-chief concluded.
