Azerbaijan to spend more on social needs - President

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev presided over the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers devoted to the first quarter 2008 results of the socio-economic development yesterday.
The meeting started with opening remarks of President Aliyev. He said the economy of Azerbaijan grew by 96% between 2004 and 2007.

According to him, GDP and industrial production have grown 14% for the pastthree months of this year.

The Head of State noted Azerbaijan leads CIS and the world in terms of per capita budget expenditures.

The country`s monetary reserves amount to $9 bln.

Azerbaijani leader stressed all these factors play a key role in tackling social problems, and improvement of the people`s standard of living is the priority of government`s policy. According to him, the targeted social assistance program covered some 400 thousand people.

Income of the population rose 33% while real income by 18%.

The Head of State pointed out measures being taken to prevent rise in prices, reduce poverty and unemployment.

According to him, 668 thousand new jobs have been created since 2004, of which 478 thousand are permanent.

President Ilham Aliyev touched upon national leader Heydar Aliyev`s oil strategy.

He said the government will continue to put a particular emphasis on development of the non-energy sector.

President reiterated that Azerbaijan would make no compromises concerning the country`s territorial integrity.

The existing tension in Armenia is the result of the aggressive policy, which cannot bring success to the country. Azerbaijan will liberate its lands, the President said.

Speaking at the event were Economic Development Minister Heydar Babayev, Minister for Emergencies Kamaleddin Heydarov, Defense Minister Yaver Jamalov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyngulu Bagirov.

They reported on the work done in the first quarter.

President Ilham Aliyev delivered his final speech at the meeting.
