Azerbaijan’s Shamakhi and the Israeli Tirat-Carmel became twin cities.

An Israeli delegation headed by Mayor of Tirat-Carmel Arieh Tal visited Azerbaijan to sign an appropriate agreement with the Shamakhi City Executive Power, Trend reported.

The delegation also included deputy ministers of Tirat-Carmel, the head of the city municipality, the general director of the international association Israel-Azerbaijan, Lev Spivak, and others.

The agreement on cooperation between the two cities was signed by Head of the Shamakhi Executive Power Asif Agayev and Mayor of Tirat-Carmel Arieh Tal.

Amir Rom, the deputy ambassador of Israel to Baku, also took part in the signing ceremony.

Notably, Ismayilli and Israeli Kiryat Bialik also may sign an agreement on becoming twin cities.

For centuries, Shamakhi was one of Azerbaijan's most prominent cities, an important cultural and trading centre and the royal seat of the Shirvanshahs (9th to 18th centuries). Furthermore, it is known as the root of Azerbaijani literature.

Today, the city is well known for wine-making and carpet weaving. To meet craftsmen, weaving famous carpets such as "Shirvan", "Gobustan", "Shamakhi", "Israfil" and "Ardzhiman" tourists can visit village of Jangi.

Throughout the ages, Israeli city Tirat Carmel was controlled by many people, including the Romans, the Ottoman and the British. The city is built on the ruins of the town of al-Tira.

Tirat Carmel was ruled by the Ottomans in late medieval and Renaissance times and was an agricultural area with wheat and goats and other farms. While conscription in the late 1800s harmed the town, it recovered, and by 1945 was an agricultural Muslim community with a Christian minority. The town was widely known for production of olives and almonds.
