Armenia with a population of hardly 3 million people faces a number of serious economic and social challenges, while ecological pollution can soon be added to this long list of problems.

Environmental and clean water activists are ringing the alarm on ecological pollution levels in this poor South Caucasian country.

Most recently, photos of the Akhuryan (Arpachay) river littered with garbage appeared in social media.  Arpachay is one of the important tributaries of Aras River. Flowing directly to Aras River it crosses Azerbaijan’s territories.

“I was here about two years ago but the situation was not so catastrophic,” said an Armenian citizen, who published the photos.

“This is the area where Gyumri river flows into Akhuryan river… This is the fault of those, who should control all this, but they don’t fulfill their duties,” he wrote commenting the photos. “Can you imagine the amount of garbage dumped into this river? And this is just the part that remained on the surface of the river.”

This incident is further evidence that environmental protection means nothing for the Armenian government. But an even more important problem is that Armenia causes environmental harm to its neighbors, as rivers originating in Armenia flow into neighboring countries.

The ratio of fresh water in South Caucasus is allocated like 62% to Georgia, 28% to Armenia and 10% to Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan’s two largest rivers, the Kura and Araz pass through Armenia and Armenians have been regularly polluting them for many years. Both rivers play a major part in agriculture and the economy of Azerbaijan.

The Armenians also pollute the Ganjachay, Goshgarchay, Shamkirchay, Agstafachay rivers that pass through the Azerbaijani territory.

Moreover, the Agstafachay reservoir in the border village of Azerbaijan’s Gazakh region is subjected to pollution from the Armenian side.  The river that feeds the Agstafachay reservoir originates in the territory of Armenia.

The inspections in the reservoir revealed a large quantity of expired drinks and chemical substances of Armenian production. Moreover, suspicious packages and explosives were detected in the territory adjacent to the reservoir. Along with polluting the river with domestic waste, the Armenian side poisons it with toxic substances.

Another proof of Armenia’s eco-terror against Azerbaijan is Sarsang water reservoirs, located in Agdara region, which is under Armenian invasion.

The Sarsang reservoir provided 6 regions, including Tartar, Agdara, Barda, Goranboy, Yevlakh and Agjabadi of Azerbaijan with water for irrigation.

Following the occupation, Armenia has blocked the biggest fresh water reservoirs of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Armenians open the canal during spring and autumn for damaging Azerbaijan lands and making floods, as well as flood mines through water for blowing in Azerbaijan lands.

Unfortunately, Armenia still is not acknowledged by international organizations as an aggressor, though they illegally occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory and continue ecological terror against Azerbaijan.
