Lithuanian Birštonas to establish ties with Azerbaijani city

Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Lithuania Hasan Mammadzade has met with mayor of Birštonas Nijol? Dirgin?ien? to discuss the establishment of relations between Birštonas and a city in Azerbaijan.

The ambassador hailed bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Lithuania, and commended the activities of bilateral intergovernmental commissions and inter-parliamentary friendly groups.

Mammadzade also highlighted Azerbaijan's achievements in the economic and social fields.

Dirgin?ien?, in turn, stressed hospitality shown to her during her visit to Azerbaijan, adding that she was impressed by Baku.

She provided information about the history, cultural monuments, socio-economic development and tourism potential of the city. The mayor stressed that Birštonas is ready to receive tourists from Azerbaijan.

Birštonas is a balneological resort and a spa town in Lithuania. The city is the administrative centre of the Birštonas municipality.

The city is known for its mineral water. This water is used by sanatoriums for mineral water pools and baths. There are three large sanatoriums in Birštonas – Tulp?, Versm? and Egl?. All of them offer halotherapy, therapeutic mud bathes, mineral water pools, baths, massages, and a wide range of curative procedures.

Birštonas promotes many cultural events including ongoing concerts, artistic performances and shows, an annual town festival and annual national sport dance competition, as well as the renowned International Jazz Festival held every other even numbered year.

There are also shops, police department, library, theatre, clinic, pharmacy, book store, schools, museums, cafes, restaurants and the City Hall.
