The EU has said it does not recognize the "referendum" in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region, occupied by Armenia, which was held on Feb. 20.

This statement was made at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council.

According to the statement, the EU does not recognize the constitutional and legal framework of the "referendum".

The results of the "referendum" can not under any circumstances affect the status of Nagorno-Karabakh region and the talks, the statement said.

The EU reiterated its support for the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group in the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
