Armenia continues to violate ceasefire with Azerbaijan

25 May 2016 [12:27] - TODAY.AZ

Armenian armed forces have 13 times violated the ceasefire with Azerbaijan on the line of contact over the past 24 hours, said Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry May 25.

Armenian armed forces stationed in Berkaber village of Armenia's Ijevan district and Dovekh village of the Noyemberyan district opened fire at the Azerbaijani positions located in the Gushchu Ayrim and Kemerli villages of the Gazakh district.

Armenian army also violated ceasefire from the positions near Garakhanbeyli, Horadiz, Gorgan villages of the Fizuli district, and from nameless heights in the territory of Goranboy, Khojavand and Fizuli districts.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
