Ceasefire violations on Azerbaijani, Armenian troops' contact line continue

Armenian military 57 times violated ceasefire on various parts of the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops over the past 24 hours.

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Oct. 9 that Armenians opened fire from positions near the Tapgaragoyunlu and Gulustan villages of Goranboy district, the Seysulan and Goyarkh villages of Terter district, the Sarijali, Kangarli, Shikhlar and Yusifjanli villages of Agdam district, the Kuropatkino village of Khojavand district, the Horadiz, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Veyselli, Gorgan and Garakhanbeyli villages of Fuzuli district.

Armenian military was also firing at Azerbaijani positions from nameless heights in the Goygol, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrayil districts.

In view of the operational situation, Azerbaijani armed forces inflicted 57 strikes on enemy positions, said the ministry.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
