Azerbaijan is interested in developing bilateral relations with the European Union in terms of promoting equitable cooperation based on mutual interests.

This was stated by Mahmud Mammadguliyev, the Deputy Foreign Minister at the informal meeting with the foreign ministers of the Eastern Partnership in Minsk on June 29.

He touched upon the prospects of cooperation with the EU on issues such as the mobility of citizens, the energy sector, creation of transport communications and trade relations, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

Mammadguliyev also stressed the importance of support by the international community and the EU to the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized borders and in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and other international organizations.

An agreement on simplification a visa regime between Azerbaijan and the EU was signed in 2013, on November 29, at the summit of member countries of the EU Eastern Partnership in Vilnius. The readmission agreement with the EU was signed in 2014.

Besides Azerbaijan, the EU signed similar agreements with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Georgia, Cape Verde and Armenia.
