Azerbaijan’s CEC registers Ilham Aliyev as presidential candidate

At Sunday's meeting the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan registered the Chairman of New Azerbaijan party, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev as a presidential candidate.

Azerbaijani citizens who have the voting right (active or passive), initiative groups of voters, political parties, blocs of political parties are entitled to the right to nominate their candidacy in order to participate in the presidential election.

Chairman of the CEC Mazahir Panahov said that expert group was created for verifying the signature lists. Transparency of activity of expert groups was provided at the highest level, Panahov said.

It was noted at the meeting, that the correct way of formatting 45,000 voting signatures, collected for the registration of Ilham Aliyev's candidacy was at the highest level, while only 206 signatures turned out to be invalid.

Azerbaijan will hold presidential election on October 9.

The previous presidential election was held on October 15, 2008. Presidential elections are held in Azerbaijan every five years.
