Mikheil Saakashvili: Destiny of South Caucasus being decided in Azerbaijan today

07 May 2013 [16:00] - TODAY.AZ
The destiny of the South Caucasus is being decided in Azerbaijan today, President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili told journalists in Baku on Tuesday.

"Without exaggeration, the future of our region is being decided here in Baku, Azerbaijan. This includes the independence of not only the South Caucasus, but also Ukraine, Moldova and all of the post-Soviet countries. The fate of Europe's security and liberty is being written by our region, in particular, by Azerbaijan," the Georgian President said.

According to him, the stability and development of Azerbaijan and the quiet and peaceful conduct of all involved in political processes are the key to the continuation of everything that has been done during the past few years.

Saakashvili also noted that there are forces in the region who are interested in destabilizing Azerbaijan.

"It's obvious; it is not a farfetched notion, we have felt that way ourselves in Georgia. These forces will make every effort to ensure that the progress that has been achieved in Azerbaijan ceases," - Saakashvili said.

According to him, the process of development in Azerbaijan keeps those with imperial ambitions awake.

"Azerbaijan, as successful as it is now, with its independent foreign policy, is in an entirely new reality for this region of the world. Azerbaijan has set an example, and so we all need to take care of it," the president said.

Mikheil Saakashvili is in Baku to participate in the 1st South Caucasus Forum being held in the capital of Azerbaijan.

The 1st South Caucasus Forum is organized by the State Committee for Work with the Diaspora, the Nizami Ganjavi International Center and the Club of Madrid.
