Using its influence in the world, Azerbaijan can play a significant role in the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, Palestinian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Nasir Abdulkarim told.
The ambassador said that the relations between Azerbaijan and Palestine are becoming stronger.
"Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov's visit to Palestine is historic, which is very important for us," the ambassador said.
The ambassador added that Mammadyarov will meet with his Palestinian counterpart, the Prime Minister and a number of state officials during the visit.
The ambassador also said that the issues of mutual interest, cooperation in the political and economic spheres, as well as the peace process will be discussed at the meetings to be held during the visit.
"Azerbaijan has always supported the position of the Palestinian state," the ambassador said. "Azerbaijan was among the countries that voted in the UN for recognizing the Palestinian state and one of the first countries which began executing this decision. From this point of view, Mammadyarov's visit to Palestine will further strengthen the relations between the two countries."
He stressed that Mammadyarov's visit to Palestine is also important from the point of view of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.
"Azerbaijan and Palestine have very good relations," he said. "Azerbaijan supported Palestine on many issues. At the same time, Azerbaijan has strong relations with Israel."
The ambassador added that while taking advantage of its geopolitical location and being a member of the UN Security Council, Azerbaijan can sway Israel in negotiations with Palestine.
The ambassador stressed that Azerbaijan has the potential to mediate peace in the region.
The Palestinian-Israeli peace talks were suspended two years ago. The Palestinians refuse to resume them until Israel stops settlement activity in the occupied territories of West Bank and East Jerusalem.
