PACE vote proves Azerbaijan’s improved global image

24 January 2013 [20:33] - TODAY.AZ
Christopher Strasser's report on Azerbaijan wasn't adopted by PACE. This is a sign of the improved image of Azerbaijan around the world, Azerbaijani MP, Rauf Aliyev told Trend on Thursday.

"Yesterday, we witnessed the discussion of the document introduced by Strasser to PACE. 125 members opposed the draft resolution. Last year, the vote took place at the UN. 155 countries supported Azerbaijan. Moreover, 40 countries voted for holding the first European Olympic Games in Azerbaijan. This is a sign of Azerbaijan's image improving to the extent that is legitimately discussed in conjunction with such issues," Aliyev said.

Note that on January 23, Christopher Strasser's report on so-called political prisoners in Azerbaijan wasn't adopted by PACE.

According to Aliyev, previously Azerbaijan wasn't even known around the world, but now the country is not only known, but also unanimously supported on a number of issues.

Azerbaijan is far ahead of other countries which joined PACE at the same time, Aliyev said.

"Azerbaijan has fulfilled all of its obligations; this is evident to all. Azerbaijan is undergoing big changes and visitors see these realities. Recent voting in PACE is one of Azerbaijan's and its president's successes. Hereafter, we must continue our work within the CE," Aliyev added.
