NATO :'Azerbaijan pursues balanced foreign policy'

05 July 2012 [14:17] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan has chosen a balance foreign policy with good relations in all directions, NATO special representative for South Caucasus and Central Asia, James Appathurai told reporters in Baku on Thursday.

"From strategic point of view Azerbaijan has chosen strong partnership with NATO, and we support that," he said.

Expressing his attitude on Azerbaijan's entry to NATO in the future, Appathurai said that it is not for him to decide on Azerbaijan's goals.

"But as far as I am aware Azerbaijan does not seek NATO membership.

Commenting on expansion of military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey, Appathurai said Azerbaijan and Turkey clearly have very good relations.

"Turkey is very critical ally for NATO and Azerbaijan is very important partner of NATO. And the allies and partners can work together beyond NATO, of course, it is for the two countries to decide," he added.
