Azerbaijan's ex- president quits politics

Ex-president of Azerbaijan, co-chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (SDPA) Ayaz Mutallibov decided to leave the party and quit politics, SDPA co-chairman Araz Alizade told Trend on Saturday.

He said Mutallibov addressed a letter in this regard to the Congress, and this document will be read out at the SDPA's 12th Congress, which opened today. According to Alizade, Mutallibov's decision will be a reason to discuss issue on abolishment of co-chairmanship institution in the party's structure at the Congress.

In addition, the Congress will also discuss the party's participation in the presidential elections. "The Social Democratic Party does not intend to join any political group," Alizade said.

The 12th Congress of the SDPA has today opened in Baku. It is attended by 172 delegates, as well as representatives of political parties invited from Hungary, Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan.

Recently, the Azerbaijani Parliament has adopted the Constitutional Law on 'Providing security for ex-presidents of Azerbaijan and their families' at a meeting.

In accordance with the constitution, the law will apply to people who have held presidential office and also in respect of people working as the president, but died. It is also in respect of people working as president and whose powers were suspended, as well as members of their families. The law will not apply to a president dismissed as a result of impeachment.
