Azerbaijan to urge UN to draft int'l convention on IDPs

“There is no document on protection of rights of IDPs.

Sometimes it is submitted as domestic affairs of governments. It is possible to agree with this argument, but if the domestic problem of a country or government causes the problem of IDPs”, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the State Committee on Refugees and IDPs Ali Hasanov told journalists: “But Azerbaijan faced the fact of occupation and it caused the IDP problem. There are serious gaps in protection and recognition of the rights of IDPs. I have already raised this issue in the annual sessions of UN High Commissioner for Refugees. But there is no change still. Azerbaijan was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in April, 2012. Azerbaijan intends to address the UN with a proposal on creating international legal basis on IDPs, adoption of relevant laws and preparation of convention.

Ali Hasanov also spoke about the activity of international organizations toward the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict: “As if, the international organizations are engaged in solving this problem in Azerbaijan. The US, Russia, and France issue statement on the settlement of the conflicts. But we would like that these above-mentioned countries to impose embargo against Armenia. The time has already come for it. Perhaps, then criminals Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan will understand what they have committed.”
