President Ilham Aliyev: 'Azerbaijan has made every effort to ensure peace and security in Afghanistan' - UPDATE - PHOTOS

World leaders convened in Chicago on Monday after completing some of the most intensive negotiations of the year on issues ranging from eradicating hunger to resolution of the eurozone crisis and ending the Afghanistan war.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev participated in the meeting. The Azerbaijani President addressed the event.

In the NATO communiqué, the heads of state and government claimed the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan was on track and "irreversible", and would provide a new non-combat NATO mission in Afghanistan after 2014 "to train, advise and assist" the Afghan army.

Opening the meeting, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said here today discussed the future of the Afghan government and people.

Speaking on the activities of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, NATO Secretary General pointed out that these forces have played an active role in the fight against terrorism. There is an ongoing process of devolution of NATO powers in Afghanistan to the country’s police and military authorities.

President Obama, after meeting Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai in Chicago on Sunday, insisted that within the next two years the war in Afghanistan as we know it would be over.
President Barack Obama praised the operation in Afghanistan carried out by International Security Assistance Force, and noted that 75 percent of Afghanistan is controlled by the Afghans.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev addressed the meeting. The Head of Azerbaijani State said since the early years Azerbaijan has made every effort to ensure peace and security in Afghanistan. President Ilham Aliyev stressed Azerbaijan continues its mission and Azerbaijani servicemen are actively involved in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan.

In addition, Azerbaijan has also contributed to Afghanistan by carrying out various trainings for the Afghan militaries. President Ilham Aliyev said Azerbaijan will continue its assistance to Afghanistan until 2014, and if necessary will spare no effort in the future.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev being on a working visit in Chicago met here with the Prime Minister of the Great Britain David Cameron.

Azerbaijani President and British Premier praised the development of bilateral relations between the two countries, expressed confidence for strengthening of relations and cooperation.

Noting the fruitful results in energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Great Britain, the sides stressed joint efforts of Azerbaijani and British oil companies, in particular BP, to develop the “South” energy corridor.

President Aliyev and Premier Cameron also discussed the state in Afghanistan, further cooperation to establish peace and safety in this country.

A number of regional questions also were focused on in the meeting.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who is in Chicago for a working visit, has met Prime Minister of Montenegro Igor Luksic.

They praised the development of the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Montenegro. They said the strengthening of political relations was boosting the bilateral cooperation in other areas, in particular in the economic one.

President Ilham Aliyev and Igor Luksic said there were good prospects for cooperation in many fields, including energy, tourism and transport infrastructure. They expressed confidence the Azerbaijan-Montenegro relations would further expand.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who is on a working visit in Chicago, has met Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegovic. They praised the relations between the two countries, and pointed out the bilateral cooperation was giving good results.

They stressed the importance of developing the bilateral ties even more. The Azerbaijani leader and the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina also had an exchange of views on a range of other issues of mutual concern.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who is in Chicago to attend a NATO summit, yesterday met Slovenia`s Prime Minister Janez Jansa.

They praised recent development of the relations between Azerbaijan and Slovenia. They stressed the importance of the Azerbaijan-Slovenia ties in different fields, in particular economy, energy and mutual investment. They also emphasized the importance of the bilateral relations in terms of joint participation in different projects.

The Azerbaijani President and the Slovenian Premier pointed out there was good potential to expand the two countries` cooperation within the European Union.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who is visiting Chicago, the US, where he will attend a NATO summit, has today met Turkish leader Abdullah Gul.

The two presidents hailed the development of the brotherly and friendly Azerbaijan-Turkey relations in all areas. They expressed confidence the two countries` relations would further expand.

The Azerbaijani and Turkish presidents had a broad exchange of views on prospects for expanding the bilateral cooperation.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev  yesterday arrived in Chicago, the USA, for a working visit which will see him attend a NATO summit.

A ceremonial guard of honor was set up for the Azerbaijani leader at the Chicago O`Hare International Airport. President Ilham Aliyev was welcomed by US officials.
