May 28 to be marked as National Day of Azerbaijan in California

The County of Orange, California has issued a proclamation recognizing 28 May 2012 as “Azerbaijani National Day – the 94th anniversary of the Republic of Azerbaijan”.

The proclamation, issued by John Moorlach, Chairman, Orange County Board of Supervisors and Shawn Nelson, Vice Chairman particularly says that Azerbaijan became the first secular and democratic state in the Muslim world on May 28, 1918, recognizing the heritage of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) and contributions of the founding fathers, the proclamation also explicitly mentions Karabakh as an integral part of Azerbaijan.

The Orange County's proclamation also notes the Azerbaijan American Council's (AAC) role as an organization that represents the Azerbaijani community's interests in California.
