26 April 2012 [09:35] - TODAY.AZ
Speaker of the Azerbaijan Milli Majlis, Ogtay Asadov met Tuesday the European Union`s special representative for the South Caucasus, Philippe Lefort. Asadov briefed Lefort on the ongoing reforms in Azerbaijan to speed up the country`s European integration.

According to him, frequent visits of the European Union`s delegations to Azerbaijan contribute to expansion of cooperation and solution of problems. The speaker said the fact that Baku hosted the second session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly was a vivid indicator of fruitful cooperation between Azerbaijan and EU.

Asadov also praised the European Union`s Nagorno-Karabakh conflict-related decisions and resolutions, which demand Armenia to withdraw from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. “But unfortunately international organizations do not control the process of implementation of their decisions. Pressure must be exerted on Armenia to make it stop the aggressive policy against Azerbaijan.”

Asadov expressed hope the EU would continue to increase efforts to contribute to settlement of the conflict. Lefort said Azerbaijan is a very important partner for the European Union. “We are ready to support Azerbaijan, particularly on settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.”
Lefort noted the EU was interested in soonest and just resolution of the conflict.

According to the special representative, the EU is concerned about the existing situation in the region. “That is why the status-quo must be changed.”
