OSCE hails amendments to Azerbaijan's law on political parties

16 April 2012 [14:05] - TODAY.AZ
Additions and amendments made to the law 'On political parties' in Azerbaijan, will contribute to the further development of democracy, OSCE Baku Office head Koray Targay told journalists on Monday.

According to Targay, the OSCE Baku office is always open to organise a dialogue between political parties and is ready to cooperate if it receives proposals from them.

The OSCE planned to organise discussions over this law with participation of the political parties. However, the law was debated in the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Commission in connection with the additions and amendments and therefore, the need for that was dismissed, Targay added.

The current law 'On political parties' was adopted in 1992. The current bill, along with other significant amendments also envisages the funding of parties from the state budget. In addition, according to the bill, it will be necessary to collect at least 5000 signatures to create a political party.
