Azerbaijan not recognizes "elections" in Georgia’s breakaway region

10 April 2012 [15:56] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry does not recognize the so-called presidential elections in South Ossetia, spokesman for Foreign Ministry Elman Abdullayev told Trend on Tuesday.

"The Republic of Azerbaijan, reiterating definitive support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, said that does not recognize the so-called presidential elections, held on April 8 in Tskhinvali region of Georgia - South Ossetia," he said.

Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry strongly believes in the need for a constructive continuation of the negotiation process to find a possible solution to the conflict, Abdullayev said.

The second round of the so-called presidential elections in South Ossetia took place yesterday. The former head of the KGB of the region, Leonid Tibilov, won the election.

Military actions were launched in the Georgian territory, South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later the Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced the two unrecognised republics as occupied territories.
