Russian Foreign Minister's visit to the region has a very important political and diplomatic meaning, the Head of Department on Social Political Issues of Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Ali Hasanov told journalists on Wednesday.
"Lavrov's visit to Azerbaijan is relevant, considering current situation in Eurasia, in the Caucasus, in the basins of the Caspian and Black Sea" Hasanov said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited Azerbaijan on April 3. Foreign Ministers of both Azerbaijan and Russia signed a joint statement marking the 20 years of establishing the diplomatic relations.
Hasanov said Lavrov informed the authorities of Azerbaijan and Armenia about Russia's policy in the region in the near future, including the position and policy priorities of Russia as the co-chair and influential state in the region with regard to the decision of the Karabakh conflict, in which, Azerbaijan is interested most of all.
On the background of the current confrontation between Iran and the international community, Lavrov said Russia is an ally and a strategic partner to Azerbaijan and other South Caucasus countries, Hasanov noted.
Hasanov also said that recently various aspects of the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Russia have been actively discussed.
"We believe that existing relations between Russia and Azerbaijan will further expand with a new team formed by Vladimir Putin," he underscored.
