A delegation led by the minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Erkki Tuomioja on Monday met with a Speaker of the Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov. Asadov expressed belief that the Finland’s delegation’s official visit to Azerbaijan would be useful for both countries. The Speaker said Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the development of economic relations with Finland. He praised the role of the two countries` presidents in strengthening the relations between the two countries.

“Documents signed between the two countries during the presidents`s reciprocal visits created solid foundation for development of cooperation,” Ogtay Asadov said.

“Cooperation between the legislative bodies of two countries is very important. Our national delegations are actively involved in cooperation within the international organizations such as the United Nations, OSCE and the Council of Europe,” Asadov said. Asadov briefed the Finnish FM on Azerbaijan`s projects in the region, the country`s role in the European energy security, as well as the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The Speaker noted the conflict must be solved only on the basis of international legal norms and the principle of Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity.

Erkki Tuomioja, in turn, congratulated Azerbaijan on election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and the country’s victory in 2011 Eurovision song contest. The sides also discussed development of inter-parliamentary ties, regional conflicts and other issues of mutual interest.
