Canadian newspaper publishes article on Armenian atrocities

27 March 2012 [13:31] - TODAY.AZ
Canadian newspaper “Calgary Herald” has published an article entitled “Atrocities should be condemned world wide” by Azerbaijani ambassador to the country Farid Shafiyev. According to Azerbaijan Embassy in Canada, the article has been published in response to Armenian ambassador Armen Yeganian`s article called “Inflammatory rhetoric won`t show path to peace".

The article says that the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, which claimed the lives of approximately 30,000 people, began with an Armenian claim of annexation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

“After the collapse of the U.S.S.R. in 1992, the conflict was turned by Armenia into a full-scale war, which resulted in the occupation of Azerbaijani territories and ethnic cleansing. The United Nations Security Council in resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 reconfirmed the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and demanded the withdrawal of Armenian forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.”

The article also underlined that the massacre in Khojaly committed by the Armenian armed forces was a tactic to implement ethnic cleansing.  “These events are well documented by international human rights organizations and a number of news media and journalists. It is not the first time that Armenian propaganda has attempted to evade responsibility for the grave crimes committed during the war.”

Mayor of Canadian city Calgary Naheed Nenshi made a statement on recognition of the Khojaly massacre as an act of genocide committed by Armenians against Azerbaijanis.
