Azerbaijan may grant status of civil servants to servicemen

04 February 2012 [10:00] - TODAY.AZ
The bill 'On the Status of Servicemen', which will be brought for discussion at the spring session of the Azerbaijani Parliament, proposes to provide the status of civil servant to the military personnel, MP, member of the Parliamentary Committee on Security and Defence Zahid Oruj said.

"If the status of civil servant is granted to the military personnel, there will be completely different approach to the question of their support. I will bring up this question in the discussion at the session," Oruj said.

Oruj said, one of the main requirements was to consider a number of issues related to the status of military personnel after the adoption of the bill 'On Military Duty and Military Service' in Azerbaijan in 2011.

"The more opportunities created and the technical basis of the military industry in establishing external relations formed, the more urgent becomes the question of professionalism and support of the military personnel. Improvement of military personnel support against a background of growing economic opportunities in Azerbaijan, determination of their status is a very important issue," Oruj said.

Adoption of the Law On status of servicemen will create an important incentive for individuals wishing to become professional soldiers, Oruj said.

"Significant higher values and principles applied in international practice related to the duties and rights of servicemen should be reflected in the law." Oruj noted.
