Beauty queen loses crown due to weight gain

A national beauty queen has been stripped of her crown after gaining weight.

Cynthia de la Vega, 19, earned the right to compete in the Miss World contest in November when she won the title of Nuestra Belleza Mundo México by coming second in Mexico's national beauty pageant.

However, organisers for Nuestra Belleza México withdrew her from the international event and dethroned her when she gained six pounds instead of losing weight.

De la Vega said at a press conference: "I was very sad and very deceived. I cried and cried and cried.

"[They] demanded that I lose a few kilos, but they never provided a nutritionist or any other assistance to ensure the weight loss."

Lupita Jones, one of the organisers of the pageant, remarked that de la Vega lacked "dedication and discipline" and that she "did not comply with the recommendations and goals agreed upon for her preparation".

De la Vega will be replaced at Miss World by Gabriela Palacio Díaz.

Karin Ontiveros Meza won Nuestra Belleza México and will represent Mexico at this year's Miss Universe.
