World`s First Man-Made Organ Transplant Implanted In Sweden

09 July 2011 [10:07] - TODAY.AZ
A patient is being released from the Karolinska University Hospital today in Stockholm after being the receipient of the world`s first synthetic organ, according to The Telegraph.

The patient had trachael cancer, and had a tumor so large that it blocked his windpipe, and he needed a new trachea. Doctors could not find a suitable donor trachea for the man, so they created their own for the patient using glass moulding and stem cells from the patient`s bone marrow and cells from his nose.

Scientists from University College London and Harvard worked together to create the synthetic organ, and it took a week to make.

The hospital said that because the cells in the synethic trachea were the patients own, he has not rejected the organ and he does not need immunosuppressant drugs. He is said to be doing well.

This successful operation means that in the future, patients who need new organs may not have to wait for a suitable organ donation match to be found.
