An old song once spoke of unrequited love being a bore. That is surely not the case with one Indonesian teenager who chopped off his penis and tossed it down a well after learning his girlfriend planned to marry another man. The pain of rejection is a universal experience and one with many expected and sometimes unexpected repercussions.
The 19-year-old who hails from a village in Central Java, was luckier than he probably believes as to survive such mutilation is unlikely. “He arrived at the hospital…in critical condition from blood loss… Cutting off a penis can be fatal,” according to Cilacap General Hospital Director, Sugeng.
As if this tale isn’t horrendous enough, doctors cannot reattach the penis because despite a thorough search, villagers were unable to find it. A normal life for this unfortunate young man seems unlikely. The teen spent several days in intensive care but is now in recovery. According to authorities he has not spoken to anyone about the incident.
“He’s still too shocked and embarrassed to talk to or see anyone,” added Director Sugeng.
There hardly seems an apt morale to this terrible tale of rejection and pain. Nor is there space for flippant remarks, as this young man will suffer for the rest of his life for a rash decision he made in one painful instant. They say the decisions we make in a single second are the ones that define our true character.
