Azerbaijan marks the Day of National Music

Azerbaijan celebrates September 18 as the Day of National Music.
This date also marks Azerbaijan's renowned composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s 125th anniversary. Azerbaijan Ministry of Culture and Tourism has prepared a rich program of events to commemorate the Day of National Music. The international music festival “Uzeyir Hajibeyli-125” has been timed with this date this year, the ministry said.

On this occasion, the leadership and staff of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and representatives of other government agencies, organizations and country’s culture figures will pay a tribute to the renowned composer at the Alley of Honor today.

A solemn ceremony dedicated to these two significant occasions will be held outside the Baku Music Academy today. The program also includes a cultural event at Hajibeyli’s house museum.

The day will end with a gala event at the Heydar Aliyev Palace. Annually, Azerbaijan celebrates Day of National Music on September 18, the birthday of Uzeyir Hajibeyli, founder of professional musical art in the country.

Hajibeyli is the author of a first ever opera in Azerbaijan and in entire East known as “Leyli and Majnun”. The opera was first staged on January 1908, the date that marks foundation of professional national opera in Azerbaijan.

As part of the program on celebrating anniversaries of great personalities and momentous events, the 34 th session of the UNESCO General Conference decided to officially celebrate 100-year anniversary of Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s "Layla and Majnun” opera in 2008-2009.
