‘Psychedelic’ works by Azerbaijani artist will be demonstrated

28 February 2012 [16:26] - TODAY.AZ
Aidan Gallery, one of the leaders on Moscow’s contemporary art scene in the post-Soviet period, returns to Art Dubai and will display three artworks by the prominent Azerbaijani artist, Faig Ahmed.

As a native of Baku, a secular city on the border of the Islamic world and Europe, the artist is inspired by the contrasts between East and West, globalization, and the blurring of national and religious boundaries. Aidan Gallery will be the only Russian gallery at Art Dubai, Aidan Gallery reported.

Each of Mr Ahmed’s artworks is a hand-made wool carpet, 1 meter-by-1.5 meter in size. But these are no ordinary Azerbaijani carpets. The patterns are severely warped and distorted, almost psychedelic.

Mr Ahmed, who exhibited in the Azerbaijani pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale, focuses on a sancta sanctorum of Azerbaijani carpet-making tradition. With this technique the artist translates traditional Azerbaijani carpet language into the universal language of contemporary art.
