Azerbaijan will join Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project if it is built - official

10 May 2007 [09:55] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan will take part in the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project if its implementation is started, Azeri Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov said.

"If this project is implemented, Azerbaijan will take part in it with great pleasure," Azimov said at a news briefing in Moscow on Tuesday.

"This project does not exist yet, although an informational war is already being waged" around it, Azimov said.

Azerbaijan is a hypothetically transit state in the case of it joining the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project, he said.

Asked to comment on the opinion that Moscow is against laying a gas pipeline along the Caspian floor, Azimov said he believes this issue could be resolved between the participants to the project on a bilateral basis.

He cited the construction of the Blue Stream gas pipeline as an example, which has been laid through the Black Sea floor without coordination with third counties.

The Trans-Caspian gas pipeline is expected to run from Tengiz (Kazakhstan) to Baku (Azerbaijan) through Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan) and should be later linked to the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline. Interfax
