Measures plan prepared to prevent ecological problems created by Ganja "Gil-torpag" industry unit

30 January 2007 [17:12] - TODAY.AZ
Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry made a statement on ecological problems created by Ganja "Gil-torpag" (Clay-soil) industry unit.

The statement says that the main problem is the wrong process of placing bauxite alunite tailings, or neutralizing these tailings. Alunite and bauxite ore was used as raw material in industry for a long time. 48-50% of these ores consist of minerals, the rest 50-52% base ore. These base ores are collected in the tailings basin of the enterprise.

"But according to the regulations, alunite and bauxite minerals are burnt at the temperature of 500 degrees and aluminum sulphate is restored by adding sulphur. The restored mineral is dissolved in alkali and its components (48-50%) are assimilated. Insoluble part (50-52%) is separated from liquid phase, after alkali is washed by hot water is transported to the tailings basin. Liquid again returns to technological process. Ecological problem for the region begins from this stage."

According to the Ministry's statement over 11 million tones alunite tailings are gathered in 159 hectare tailings basin.

The tailings consist of Al, Si, Fe, Na elements. 65-70 hectare of these slurry tanks has been filled with the alunite tailings and withdrawn from use. Besides, over 5.7m tones of bauxite tailings have been gathered in the 82 hectare bauxite slurry tanks. The enterprises work with interruptions and in some cases misuse the regulations. The surface of the tanks is not covered with water. Some part of the surface has been dried. The regulations read, the only way to avoid environmental pollution of tailings is to keep the surface under the water. As the bauxite and alunite tailings are not humidified, they become small powered and pollinate in windy weather. In result, the larger areas underwent pollutions. One method is used to prevent the pollution. But as this method is not so effective, the environment is polluted with the tailings. The Ministry Department for Environmental Protection monitored Ganja "Gil-torpaq" industry unit was imposed penalty. Action program has been worked out to prevent the shortcomings. The program notes that one of the solutions of the pollination is to cover the tanks with soil and to keep areas filled with tailings under the water, APA reports.
