The Iranian and Russian navies are expected to stage joint drills in the Caspian Sea within the coming days to strengthen naval cooperation between the two countries.

Navy commander, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari has said that a flotilla of Iranian warships on Saturday will leave for the Russian port city of Makhachkala located on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, IRIB news agency reported.

The flotilla, comprised of the domestically-manufactured Damavand destroyer and a missile-launching frigate, dubbed Peykan, is expected to berth in the Russian port within two days, he added.

The commander said that the one-day drills will take place as part of the three-day visit.

Back in July, the two countries’ navies held similar drills in northern Iranian city of Bandar-e Anzali.
