Azerbaijan’s power exports reach 600 kWh

Azerbaijan exported 597,698 kilowatt per hour (kWh) of electricity during the first 7 months of 2017, which shows three-fold rise compared to the indicator of the same period of 2016.

The cost of the exported electricity in January-July amounted to $25,915 million.

Azerbaijan, which strives to develop its non-oil sector and diversify economy, can be proud of its power sector. Today, the country is able to fully meet its own energy needs, and seeks to supply power to the European market.

Currently, the country’s energy system is based on the capacity of 14 thermal and over 10 hydro power plants. Over the past 10 years, the power grid of the country increased by 40 percent, which allows not only cover domestic needs, but also forms export potential of the country.

Azerenergy JSC, which is the largest electrical power producer in Azerbaijan, produced 22.6 billion kWh of electricity in 2016, as compared to about 22.5 billion kWh produced in 2015.

Power generation helps Azerbaijan to create an annual export potential of several billion kWh. To export surplus electricity, Azerbaijan eyes several major projects, including the Energy Bridge Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey, which will allow Azerbaijan to export to Europe about 700 MW of electricity a year.
