The Government of Slovakia is interested in opening of filling stations of the Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR in the country, said Jafar Huseynzadeh, the head of the diplomatic mission of Azerbaijan to Slovakia.

SOCAR, which is the only producer of oil products in Azerbaijan, owns filling stations in Georgia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Romania and Azerbaijan. The total number of SOCAR filling stations amounts to 300.

Huseynzadeh further said that Slovakia is also ready to buy Azerbaijani gas.  “The Southern Gas Corridor is among the possible directions for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Slovakia in the oil and gas sector,” he said.

Today, Azerbaijan exports gas to Turkey and Georgia. After the completion of the construction of the Southern Gas Corridor project, gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field will also be supplied to Europe.

The Azerbaijani gas can be supplied to Slovakia via Eastring gas pipeline as well, Pavol Kubik, the representative of the Slovak company Eustream said earlier.

There is great potential for this, taking into account the fact that the Eastring project is not tied to a particular supplier and is therefore open to gas supplies from any source, according to Kubik.

Initiated by Slovakia in 2014, the Eastring project is designed to connect the gas networks of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. At the first stage, the pipeline will provide the Balkan countries with gas from the European market.

In the future, the gas pipeline can ensure the import of gas to Europe, both from established and alternative sources from the Caspian region and the Middle East.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority projects for the EU and envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region through Georgia and Turkey to Europe. Later, other sources may be connected to the project.

SOCAR is 100 percent owned by the government of Azerbaijan. SOCAR participates in joint ventures (including ventures in Georgia and Turkey), consortia, and operating companies established with SOCAR’s participation.

The company includes such production associations as Azneft (the enterprises producing oil and gas onshore and offshore), Azerkimya (the chemical enterprises) and Azerigas (distributor of gas produced in the country), as well as oil and gas processing plants, service companies, and the facilities involved in geophysical and drilling operations.
