The scientific potential of Azerbaijan has a special place in world science. The conclusion was made in a report of the international Thomson Reuters corporation undersigned by department chief for Near East, Africa, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States Shahruz Sharifrazi and manager for Central and Eastern European countries David Hork.

The number of scientific publications released in Azerbaijan decreased by 9 percent in 2012 while the scientific potential of the country maintains its place in world science. This is proven by a 61 percent increase in the number of citations referring to Azerbaijani publications, the report said.

Countries develop scientific and technical exchange programs in order to support development in the present-day globalizing world. Furthermore, by supporting scientific works, conferences in educational institutions and publishing scientific books and magazines, they support the development of this field.

According to the Thomson Reuters report, the Applied Mathematics and Calculus journal (honorary editor - Tamer Bashar, editors - Ali Abbasov, Fikrat Aliyev and Vladimir Larin) was named a "qualitative scientific journal on the world scale" in terms of the citation indicators and was included in a relevant list of this organization.

Over the 11 years of publishing, the magazine has carried out scientific exchange with 200 international organizations from 42 countries.

The Applied Mathematics and Calculus is the only Azerbaijani journal entered to a report of the Thomson Reuters agency. There are 77 Turkish and more than 150 Russian journals in the enlarged list of the agency as well.

It is important to develop the scientific base of Azerbaijan with more high quality journals and other publications, the report said.

In conclusion of the report the Thomson Reuters agency expressed its confidence in the achievement of the goal on opening access of Azerbaijan's scientific community to the Web of Knowledge research platform.
