10 April 2013 [10:38] - TODAY.AZ
The volume of the underground gas storage facility which is expected to be built in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR), will be decided after studying the exploration drilling's results, a source in SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) told Trend.

According to him, some works are currently underway to drill the first exploration well with the depth over 600 meters. Depending on the results of the drilling of the first well, a decision will be made on drilling other wells.

Drilling of the first exploration well on the basis of the Nehru salt deposit is conducted at the Tumbul site.

At present, Azerbaijan has two underground gas storage facilities, Kalmaz and Garadagh.

Geological surveys are undertaken by SOCAR's drilling unit in the NAR, head of SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev said earlier, adding that the gas storage facility's volume will amount to 50-200 million cubic meters of gas.

Building the underground gas storage facility in the NAR is necessary from the point of meeting its gas needs and strengthening the energy security.
