The experience at the First European Games taking place in Baku is fantastic, Ireland's boxer Brendan Irvine said, the Irish Mirror reported.

“The whole experience here is fantastic, the competition, the training, the food and being part of it all. I’m really enjoying it and I’m very proud to get to the semi-finals,” Irvine said.

Brendan Irvine, at 19, the youngest member of the Irish boxing squad in Baku, won in the 49kg class and assured himself of at least bronze, Ireland’s first medal in all sports at the Games.

Another Irish boxer Katie Taylor, who is also participating in the Games, previously told The Irish Times that the Irish team is young, strong and victory-oriented.

Taylor, the current Irish, European, World and Olympic Champion in the 60 kg division, said that it is great privilege to represent the country, in such a big competition as the European Games.

The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12, will last till June 28. There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.

More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
