Salyan welcomes Baku 2015 torch

Salyan became the next destination for the Journey of the Flame of the inaugural European Games, arriving from Jalilabad, on May 4.

Torchbearers received a rapturous welcome from local residents upon arrival at the entrance gate of Salyan.

At the gate, the flame was passed to kickboxing coach Rahil Isgandarov. Ten torchbearers then started their 3.2km long route and carried the flame into the Heydar Aliyev Park in the city center to the sound of applause.

Student at Salyan city secondary school No. 1 Zarkhanim Aghabayova lit a special commemorative lamp which will remain lit and on display in Salyan until the Closing Ceremony of the Games on June 28.

The flame will next travel to Neftchala.

The innovative sport event in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku will gather 6,000 athletes from 50 countries to compete in 20 sports.

The Journey of the Flame is bringing the spirit of Baku Games across Azerbaijan from April 26. In some 48 days, the spirit of Baku 2015 will inspire 60 regions across Azerbaijan, to finally arrive in the magnificent Baku National Stadium on June 12.
